Photography Trends In 2021

I love the beginning of a new year. It is such a fun, fresh start, and a great time to set new goals. I have so many goals for the new year, including trying to new things and challenging myself as an artist.

I wanted to look at a lot of the trends that were happening in 2020 and take a peek ahead at the next months!

Bold Colors

Going bold was big last year. This happened in fashion, décor, art, and photography. One way that I have loved to do that is by highlighting a bold piece of clothing that someone is wearing during my shoots.

You can incorporate bold colors by increasing the saturation on specific elements of a photo, or by using contrast through a subtle background. Bold colors can draw the eye to part of the image, so be sure to highlight the people you are shooting!

Authentic

Authenticity and vulnerability are elements that creatives have been bringing to pictures for years. Being able to capture someone’s true self in an image is a skill and an art within itself. This is something I do through my storytelling and lifestyle photography.

I know I have seen a lot more trends about minimizing filters on Instagram stories or using less glam during photoshoots. Of course, you always want to reflect what the people you are shooting want and respect however they feel most confident.

I think one of the best ways to capture authenticity in your photos this year is to create moments in your sessions that are raw and real. Have a husband whisper something he loves about his wife to her or ask the kids in your shoot to tell a joke.

Retro

Throwback style and design can be seen in home decorating styles and seeing more vintage pieces come back into circulation. In photography u can see this retro trend through the love for film or film-style photos. I love the hashtag #lookslikefilm and seeing all of the gorgeous photos everyone shares online.

Outdoor Photography

I think it is safe to say we all spent enough time inside last year, so we are definitely focused on getting outside in 2021. A lot of my sessions happen outside since there are so many gorgeous places to shoot locally, but if you are used to hosting indoors it may be time to start exploring! Take your camera with you when you go on a local nature walk or explore some of the attractions near you.

I have found so many hidden gems by keeping my eye out when I’m with my girls or even just exploring on Google Maps.

Togetherness

With all the craziness that was 2020, focusing on togetherness is a big trend that I have seen. From focusing on family and being with the ones you love. Having photos that reflect that love and show families together is especially important now.

This is something that I do in every single session. I love to capture the love and connection between people and have that totally shine through in every picture.

Learning

This is one of my biggest goals every year, but I know I’m not alone. I love to learn new techniques and work with other creatives to continue to be the best photographer I can be. One way that I have done this in my career is through partnerships and mentorships with other artists. Last year, I even started hosting my own mentorships where I walk my students through the editing process and give them personalized videos to help them take the next step in their own businesses.

Are you looking to learn more about editing and photography this year? If so, I’d love to talk! You can check out my mentorship opportunities here!
